Project Description

Participants were tasked with developing affordable and sustainable design concepts for a housing project in China, with a focus on accommodating 25 households within an 8,000-square-meter area. Each design should support a typical family of two adults and at least one child, providing all essential amenities while respecting the collective lifestyle of farmers.

The designs were to be adaptable to various site sizes, as no specific location was predetermined for the competition. A key requirement was that the designs were to adhere to Chinese cultural traditions and be versatile enough to work on both large and small plots.

In my submission, emphasis was placed on balancing public and private spaces, reducing energy consumption throughout the year, and minimizing solar gains during summer.  The use of prefabricated rammed earth construction is crucial due to its breathable properties. This approach, which favors raw and unfinished materials, requires developing a specialized machine to efficiently create the necessary components.  The goal was to integrate low-tech solutions with high-performance outcomes.
