4TH YEAR UNIVERSITY PROJECT- BALLET SCHOOL
Location Glasgow, UK | Type Commercial |
Project Description
The design focused on five key concepts: Voyeurism, Kinetic Architecture, Circulation as a Journey, Movement, and Translucency.
The ballet school’s design features a complex array of spaces, each serving different purposes and needs. These spaces are not only distinct in volume but are also thoughtfully interconnected.
The workshop faces the lively Trongate street to the south and Brunswick Lane to the west. Its facade integrates sets that blend seamlessly with the street, creating a dynamic environment through constant shifting and movement. This design incorporates elements of kinetic architecture, with a gantry enabling movement along the lane and street, while the glass box structure allows for public visibility.
Movement is central to the ballet school’s design. A complex ramping system runs through the building's core, structured as a square divided into four quadrants. This layout allows users to see much of the program while restricting access to certain areas. The wide ramps offer more than just circulation; they serve as spaces for warming up, socializing, or exploring.
At the top of the design, the ballet studios benefit from ample natural light. Each studio features a translucent facade made of glass channels, reflecting the elegance of ballet. This translucency contrasts with the roughness of the machinery and the corten steel-clad theatre, creating a harmonious balance between the delicate, light-filled ballet spaces and the more robust elements of the building.
